TUSAŞ Launches Turkish Utility Helicopter Program as Prime Contractor

TUSAŞ – Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) has officially commenced the Turkish Utility Helicopter Program (TUHP) as the prime contractor. Following the issuance of export licenses by the United States, contracts have been signed between the Defense Industry Agency (SSM), TUSAŞ as the main contractor, Sikorsky Aircraft as the main subcontractor, and various local subcontractors, marking the program’s initiation.

Scope and Deliverables

The program entails the production of 109 T70 Black Hawk Helicopters under license in Turkey over the next decade. These helicopters will serve six key users, including:

Turkish Land Forces Command
Turkish Air Force Command
Gendarmerie General Command
Special Forces Command
General Directorate of Security
General Directorate of Forestry

Responsibilities and Contributions

TUSAŞ will oversee:

Production of critical structural components, including the cabin, cockpit, tail cone, horizontal and vertical stabilizers, and rotor blades
Final assembly, testing, and integrated logistics support of the T70 helicopters

ASELSAN will develop and integrate core avionics systems and collaborate with Sikorsky on the Integrated Modular Avionics System (IMAS) for the cockpit.
TUSAŞ Engine Industries (TEI) will produce the T-700 engines required for the helicopters.
Alp Aviation will manufacture and assemble landing gear, gearbox components, and dynamic parts.

Strategic and Economic Impact

With a total contract value of approximately $3.5 billion, the TUHP will address Turkey’s utility helicopter needs across military and civil sectors. Moreover, the program enhances the Turkish defense industry’s capability to fulfill domestic demands, reinforcing its role in both national and international aerospace markets.

This initiative represents a pivotal step towards self-reliance in aerospace and defense technology, while strengthening the collaboration between Turkish and global aerospace industries.
